about

The people who don't or won't get why there was the need for this song are the very people whom this song is addressing.

This song is also for women of obvious colour.

We deserve uplifting. We deserve affirmation for all the years we were smacked down for how we look. Every black woman, and woman of colour who is obviously so, and perhaps resented for it.

Every so-called "weird black girl" deserves it. Every one of us who is accused of being "white" or afflicted with "self-hatred" for liking or dressing different deserves it. Every one of us who just decides to be who we are, which, for some reason, is an act of "rebellion" in and of itself. We deserve it.

We are worthy of being, contrary to what the world would have you believe. Just...being, and loving who we are in spite of all the hate.

This does not mean I am saying that EVERY woman isn't worthy. Some of us just need this affirmation much more than those who seem to fit the "standard" model of beauty and acceptance.

Since I happen to be a "black grrrl", I wrote it from a black grrrl perspective.

NOTE: I said "a", not "ALL". I don't speak for all of us. But I'm confident some can feel confident inside these lyrics.

Black. Grrrls. Are. Kawaii.

We are, y'know.
The End.

lyrics

I know that my life matters
I know that yes I rock
Despite my lox I do love my hair
I just colour outside your box
I just colour outside your lines
Black cat till the day I die
In case you don’t geddit I’m affirming
That black grrrls are kawaii

Pink lox in shock eyes pop jaws drop every time we walk the streets
By far the vanguard of any style challenge we choose to meet
(Who they think they are?) Who’s asking?
(Why you dressed like that?) Cuz I can
Aesthetic and look assassins
Yeh we took that shxt and ran

We rock the pigtails twintails cat tails with ears to match
We slay Lolita decora gothic glam with all panache
Panache but that don’t make us Minaj or Kim or any other chyck you pin
No I don’t know George Clinton but my dad knew him long story to begin

Anyway –who you s’posed to be is an ask I get so sick of hearing
You don’t like how I look here’s a solution stop staring
Can’t go pink hair don’t care without compare to someone else out there
Not only that there’s those out there
Who say we can’t wear these clothes out there

We say yes we can honeylamb won’t hide our light cuz you can’t stand it
Yawl might not wanna hear this it goes against and some fear this
You turn heads we snap spines go ‘gainst the grain on both sides
Don’t play dress up I wear clothes think on that ‘fore you look down nose

I know that my life matters
I know that yes I rock
Despite my lox I do love my hair
I just colour outside your box
I just colour outside your lines
Black cat till the day I die
In case you don’t geddit I’m affirming
That black grrrls are kawaii

Why are full lips okay for you
and full lips aren’t okay for us
We come by this naturally thus
Our full hips and our big butts

Why wearing braids get us sacked
That ain’t fiction that’s a fact
Why can you embrace your curls
But when we do it’s a personal attack

Why yank our culture roll
Hip-hop rock and blue eyed soul
Anime cosplays we can’t do cuz reasons but
Neither can you

Why every time we make a statement
About our beauty you try to take it
And it’s not just us it’s anyone brown
We stand up; you put down

Is it fear of missing out
Hell we missed out all our lives
So we stood strong on our own two
It’s pro-us not anti-you

White person did that yawl be mad
You say but what yawl don’t understand
Is that yawl already got that and don’t need it
You refuse to believe it

I know that my life matters
I know that yes-- I rock
Despite my lox I do love my hair
I just colour outside your box
I just colour outside your lines
Black cat till the day I die
In case you don’t geddit I’m affirming
That black grrrls are kawaii

Look it ain’t about excluding
It’s about us needing our own
Cuz who’s gonna lift us up
When we’re denied access to the throne

We were told we just weren’t pretty
Or that our look just don’t sell
Even though that ain’t quite right
We acted and built up ourselves

History months student unions marches
Pride day these are a few things
Got gear to assert we here
Celebrating our kinky hair

Celebrating our blackness you don’t understand it
Can’t we just unite the planet
Maybe but yawl need to know
The system it don’t always show

Society straight negates
The need for all that counterweight
And all that hate cuz we say we’re proud
Already know too well they proud

We do for us by us it’s needed
Black girls rock ain’t being conceited
When we say or wear that don’t get butthurt
Privilege is your tshirt

I know that my life matters
I know that yes I rock
Despite my lox I do love my hair
I just colour outside your box
I just colour outside your lines
Black cat till the day I die
In case you don’t geddit I’m affirming
That black grrrls are kawaii
